Salt, sugar, and fat are unbelievably tasty when combined. These ingredients also make any food taste great. We are all guilty of adding them to our food and diet every now and then, however, in the long run, consuming too much like of any of them may be harmful to our overall health.

Salt, especially, is something we cannot have our food without. Unprocessed foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, meats, and dairy foods are low in sodium.

Short-term effects of too much sodium intake included swollen hands and feet or a swollen face. To some, they also become bloated because of water retention but several glasses of water and reducing intake in upcoming meals can help ease these effects. The body will eliminate it and your body will just come back to a less swollen state.

However, the long-term results of this included the increase in developing health issues like enlarged heart muscle, headaches, heart failure, high blood pressure, kidney disease, kidney stones, osteoporosis, stomach cancer, and stroke.

Here are some signs that indicate you’re having too much sodium:

  • Frequently urinating – this is a classic sign but this is also a symptom of conditions like UTIs, type 2 diabetes and an overactive bladder.
  • Persistent thirst – excessive salt will leave you feeling thirsty because salt affects the balance of your body fluid. Drink plenty of water.
  • Swelling and bloating – this is because of water retention. The swelling normally happens in on the fingers and around the ankles and is called edema. Reduce your intake.
  • You want salt every now and then – eating too much sodium will make you want it for more. Your taste buds adapt to saltiness and every now and then resulting the bland and boring taste. This way, you’re wanting salt more.
  • Frequent but mild headaches – this is because of dehydration. The key to this is drinking lots of water.
  • Craving for salty foods – this is because your taste buds have already adapted to salty flavor as per NDTV’s post.
