Gallbladder Removed – Can You Live Without A Gallbladder?

You had your gallbladder removed? Here are some things to know.

GALLBLADDER REMOVED – Can you still live normally if your gallbladder has been removed? Here are some things you should know.

The role of the gallbladder in the body is for the storage and releasing of bile that the liver produces. Bile helps the body digest fats that have come from the foods we ate. This is located at the upper right part of your abdomen (belly) and just under your liver.

However, there will be situations where your doctor will suggest that this organ should be removed. Mainly, the reason is the existence of gallstones in it and the complications it may cause. Medical conditions like biliary dyskinesia, choledocholithiasis, cholecystitis, and pancreatitis may require the removal of this organ.

The question now is: Can you still normally live even without your gallbladder?

The answer is: Yes. You can still have a perfectly normal life even without this particular organ. What happens is that when your liver produces bile, it will just directly go into your digestive tract.

Before the operation, you will need to follow a certain special diet but this does not mean you should continue doing it afterward. What you will need is to have a generally healthy, balanced diet.

Here are some diet changes you can do:

  • Limit fat consumption and moderately eat foods like:
    • sausage
    • beef
    • fried foods
    • chips
    • chocolate
    • full-fat milk, yogurt, or cheese
    • cream
    • skin-on poultry and;
    • foods that contain a lot of vegetables, peanut, canola, or olive oil
  • Do have a regular but small portions throughout the day. Avoid eating large meals.
  • Limit you consumption of foods high in fiber. Foods like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, beans, nuts, whole-grain or whole-wheat bread, and bran are high in fiber.
  • Tea, coffee, or soft drinks must also be reduced because these drinks can increase gas, abdominal pain, and bloating after the removal of your gallbladder as per an article from Healthline.
