BULIMIA NERVOSA – The eating disorder called bulimia nervosa has corresponding side effects physically and emotionally and here are some.

Mostly at risk of bulimia nervosa or bulimia are women. This is a disorder associated with unusual eating in large amounts and quantities of foods then wanting to let it all go through vomiting, laxative, and diuretic abuse, not eating at all and exercising excessively.

This condition has some side effects and these might be life-threatening most especially if the individual denies seeking treatment from the experts. And bulimia may affect a person physically and emotionally.

Here are the physical side effects:

  • Russell’s sign where a notable sign is scratching at the back of the hand as a result of the person reaching his throat to vomit.
  • Vomiting can cause tooth decay because of the high levels of acid of the contents from the stomach.
  • Swollen salivary glands due to vomiting.
  • Acid reflux for vomiting can weaken the sphincter where the stomach acid starts.
  • Sore throat is due to the damaging acids from stomach contents.
  • Dehydration because of purging.

This condition may also be tormenting emotionally. The affected person may feel feelings of guilt, shame, lack of control, and distorted body image, and keeping their suffering to themselves may apparently lead to additional stress and anxiety.

Other concerns to look after to on people with bulimia are:

  • major mood swings
  • depressive thoughts or actions
  • obsessive-compulsive behaviors
  • general anxiety
  • self-isolation
  • acts of self-harm
  • impulsive behaviors
  • low self-esteem
