However, just like anything else, too much is bad and often time comes with unwanted consequences. Although it is safe for most adults, it is best to be mindful of the amount you take in a day. An excessive amount of coffee in a single day may have negative effects.

The caffeine it has may result in insomnia, nervousness and restlessness, stomach upset, nausea and vomiting, increased heart and breathing rate, and others. On the other hand, consuming large amounts may lead to headaches, anxiety, agitation, ringing in the ears, and irregular heartbeats.

How much is the moderate amount? As stated above, coffee is safe for most adults but the moderate amount you must consider in a day is to limit yourself to two (2) to four (4) cups as per an article from WebMD. For pregnant women, trying to get pregnant, or doing breastfeeding, one must limit coffee intake. And people who suffer from heartburn or acid reflux must consume a lesser amount as well or not at all.

One of the main benefits of coffee due to its caffeine is that it increases alertness. This is why you must avoid drinking coffee at least 4 to 6 hours before going to bed to have a good and quality rest and sleep.

Taking coffee while on medication may also have some effects. Make sure to ask your doctor first.
