The components of health-related fitness. Check them out here!

HEALTH-RELATED FITNESS – These are the five components of fitness – flexibility, cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and body composition.

Fitness is for everyone and being physically fit is important, an indication of good health. In SAGE Journals, am abstract theoretically defined health-related fitness (HRF) as “a multidimensional construct containing the components cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition”.

Basically, we were told to get into our steps daily as a minimum way to maintain physical health and prevent serious conditions. Prolonged sitting is also not highly suggested but lifting weight is. Keeping the body moving relates to health and is essential.

And understanding the five health-related components of physical fitness will help you to design a better program or routine for good health.

Physical fitness is actually categorized into two components: the HRF and the SRF or skill-related components. The SRF is the component that refers to your abilities in doing sports activities.

Here are the 5 components of HRF:

  • Cardiovascular Endurance
This is the body’s ability to take and deliver oxygen to the tissues through the heart, lungs, arteries, vessels, and veins. Good cardiovascular endurance will make this process happen efficiently, improve cellular metabolism, and improve your movement to do daily physical tasks.

The workout that can benefit the heart includes running, walking, cycling, swimming, dancing, circuit training, and boxing. It is recommended to do 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise in a week.

  • Muscular Endurance
Muscular strength and muscular endurance are two different things. The latter refers to the ability of a particular muscle group to contract in a given resistance against it.
  • Muscular Strength
Simply described, this component is the ability of how much force a muscle can exert or how heavy it can lift. To improve this, one must lift heavier weights but it fewer reps.
  • Flexibility
Flexibility is the ability of muscles and joints to move in a full range of motion. Having good flexibility will not hinder movements. And if one has poor flexibility, balance, coordination, and agility will be affected.

Yoga, tai chi, and pilates will help improve this.

  • Body Composition
This is the ratio of the body of fat mass to muscles, bone, and other tissues or the fat-free mass. A certain amount of fat is good and necessary for good health but an excessive amount is not. Too much fat can lead to certain serious health conditions.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says active people tend to live longer and will likely prevent the development of diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and some cancers.

Being physically active can also accordingly help people with chronic diseases to manage their conditions and complications.
