PCOS MYTHS – Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal condition and here are some myths debunked related to this.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal condition that affects reproductive-age women. Among the signs and symptoms of PCOS include:

  • irregular periods or no period at all
  • weight gain
  • difficulty getting pregnant
  • thinning hair or hair loss
  • oily skin or acne
  • excessive hair growth

Since this condition is not well understood yet, there are some major concerns women are facing related to this. There are myths about this but here are some facts to clear them up.

  • You can’t get pregnant – It’s true that this condition is one of the common infertility causes in women but this is treatable through some lifestyle adjustments. One can get pregnant naturally with these lifestyle changes.
  • It causes cysts on the ovaries – Although it’s true but not on all cases. As mentioned above, this is just one of the three most distinct signs along with some problems in one’s period and high level of androgens.
  • Infertility is the only problem – Infertility is one of the effects if the condition is not managed well but PCOS may come with other medical concerns like insulin resistance, weight management, hair loss, abnormal hair growth, and acne. 
  • Birth control pills is the cure – This is not true. Birth control pills can manage the symptoms of the condition but not totally cure it. As of this days, there’s still no cure to PCOS.
  • Poor lifestyle is the major cause – The real causes of PCOS is actually not determined yet, however, some modifications for a healthier lifestyle may make a big difference. Choose PCOS-friendly foods and be more active.
  • Hirsutism – While it is true that women with this condition may suffer from hair growth in unwanted part like on their upper lip, chin, or chest but this is not the same for all. The abnormal hair growth hair growth is due to the excess androgens but this case is not the same for all women.
  • If your period is irregular, you have PCOS – As mentioned, irregular period is just one of the symptoms of PCOS and among other conditions. This means that PCOS is one of them. Irregular periods may be an indication of other concerns like breastfeeding, extreme dieting or overexercising, pelvic inflammatory disease, uterine fibroids, and thyroid disorders.
