HEALTH TIPS – Here are some health tips and important things to know about stroke and heart attack according to Doc Willie Ong.

Stroke is one of the top causes of death in the Philippines. This is the type of dangerous condition that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. This happens when the blood vessel carrying oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts.

Symptoms:

  • numbness or weakness
  • confusion such as trouble speaking or difficulty understanding speech
  • trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • trouble in walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or lack of body coordination

Meanwhile, heart attack happens when the flow of blood to the heart is blocked, oftentimes, because of fat, cholesterol, and other substances. This can damage or destroy part of the heart muscle. Moreover, not all heart attacks have the same symptoms. Some are mild and some are severe while others show no symptoms at all. Some attacks are sudden but some have warning signs hours, days or weeks prior.

Symptoms:

  • Pressure, tightness, pain in chest
  • Shortness of breath
  • Lightheadedness or sudden dizziness

Here are some tips regarding these two conditions which can ultimately put you in danger:

  • Stop smoking.
  • Eat healthy and avoid foods that are fatty, salty, and oily in order to avoid blockage or clotting.
  • Regular exercise for normal flow of blood and to maintain an ideal weight.
  • Watch for these conditions that can result to either stroke or heart attack: high blood pressure(normal blood pressure is 120 over 80), diabetes, and cholesterol level.
