Monthly periods usually come with throbbing or cramping pains in the lower abdomen which is called dysmenorrhea or menstrual cramps. This kind of discomfort is annoying and bothering too for many women.

It can even disrupt them from doing their usual daily activities and interfere with their productivity.

Apart from periods, there will also be cases where one can experience this kind of pain even without menstruation. Treating the cause is key to reducing the pain and here are some things you need to know about cramps that happen despite having no period.

  • Pregnancy (other symptoms may also occur like breast tenderness, mood swings, and fatigue)
  • Thyroid Conditions
  • Hormonal Birth Control (cramping without menses is a common side effect)
  • Stress (this is also one of the reasons why a woman can miss her period)
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (this is a common hormonal disorder)
  • Uterine Polyps (this is an overgrowth of the lining of the uterus)
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease or PID (an infection of the uterus, fallopian tubes, or ovaries)
  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTI)
  • Excessive Exercising

According to a post from Women’s Health Mag, the other causes include mittelschmerz, interstitial cystitis, miscarriage, endometriosis, irritable bowel syndrome, ovarian cancer, ruptured cyst, pelvic floor muscle dysfunction, ectopic pregnancy, appendicitis, lactose intolerance, and indigestion.

To tell whether having cramps without a period is caused by something simple or more serious is a bit tough. The best thing to do is to speak to a doctor for a proper diagnosis. Early diagnosis is early treatment and prevention of further serious conditions.
