Napping Benefits: How Long Should A Child Take A Nap?

Here are some napping benefits for children and how long it should last.

NAPPING BENEFITS – Sleeping during early afternoon for kids is very beneficial and based on their, this is how much nap they would need.

In a previous post, napping for adults is very beneficial to help them improve their performance, focus, and mood. Accordingly, even though they don’t necessarily need the nap, it has good effects for them to do their tasks and the ideal length should be just 20 to 30 minutes so as to avoid sleep inertia – the feeling of grogginess and disorientation instead of boosting energy levels.

Napping Benefits

Aside from the abovementioned benefits of napping to adults, it also makes them relaxed and alert. However, another downside of this is that if you nap way over 3 in the afternoon, you are likely to experience difficulty to sleep during the night.

Now, as for kids, napping is very essential and important for their growth. It helps them improve their cognitive function, lets them rest, and also has good effects to give them a better mood. But unlike adults, children need longer napping time.

According to an article from Health Line for children up to 12 years, this is how much sleep they would need for a nap as recommended:

  • 0 to 6 months: two or three daytime naps for 30 minutes to 2 hours each
  • 6 to 12 months: two naps a day, lasting for 20 minutes to a few hours
  • 1 to 3 years: one afternoon nap for 1 to 3 hours
  • 3 to 5 years: one afternoon nap for 1 or 2 hours
  • 5 to 12 years: no nap needed if they’re getting the recommended 10 or 11 hours of sleep per night

Sleeping is definitely plays an important role for our health. Children and adults might have different napping needs but it still all comes down that regardless of age, having enough time of rest and sleep is very important.
