FLOOD DISEASES – Here is a list of six (6) health conditions that are common when there is flood.

Several areas are currently experiencing heavy flooding following the occurrence of typhoons. Typhoon Rolly brought heavy rains to many flood-prone areas in the Philippines.

Rolly caused damages to infrastructures and as well as loss of lives. Many of the areas it has struck have yet to recover from its impact when another tropical storm, Typhoon Ulysses, entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

Ulysses also brought heavy rains to some of the areas hit by Rolly. Many cities in Luzon now are experiencing heavy flooding.

Flood Diseases

During the flood, there is a risk of the spread of flood diseases. The World Health Organization (WHO) noted six health conditions that are common when there is flood. They are typhoid fever, cholera, hepatitis A, malaria, dengue fever, and hypothermia.

1. Typhoid Fever – This disease is caused by a bacteria, the Salmonella typhi. Among its signs are nausea, abdominal pain, fever, and headache. It can be transmitted through food and water.

2. Hepatitis A – This is a liver infection or disease. Its signs include fever, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and abdominal discomfort. It is also caused by a virus.

3. Dengue Fever – One of the most popular flood diseases is dengue fever. Based on a report on Jakarta Post, it comes from mosquitos and its symptoms include rashes, fever, and nausea.

4. Hypothermia – This health condition happens when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it leading to low body temperature. Shivering is one of its main symptoms.

5. Malaria – Another mosquito-borne disease is malaria. Mosquitos that may cause this health condition may be rampant during the rainy season or their breeding season.

6. Cholera – Based on the article, cholera is an infectious disease characterized by diarrhea. It is caused by a bacteria, the Vibrio cholerae.
