Intermountain Healthcare defined skin allergy as “skin that becomes irritated because the immune system reacted to something that is usually harmless” and this is called an allergic reaction.

Now, based on a post from the American Academy Of Allergy Asthma and Immunology, the following are the various types of skin allergies:

  • Aptopic Dermatitis or Eczema
    • This is a skin condition that causes itchiness, redness, dryness, scaly patches, hyperpigmentation, and thickened skin. It is linked with asthma, allergic rhinitis or hay fever, and food allergy.
  • Allergic Contact Dermatitis
    • The skin may develop symptoms like redness, bumps, itchiness, or swelling if it gets directly in contact with an allergen. The symptoms may range from mild to severe.
  • Urticaria or Hives
    • These are the raised, itchy red bumps, the result of the immune system releasing histamine. This condition has two kinds: acute and chronic. The chronic type can last from months to years while the acute type occurs if there’s contact made between the skin and allergens like food or non-allergic factors such as heat, medications, foods, insect bites, or infections.
  • Angioedema
    • Angioedema has two types as well: acute and chronic. Acute angioedema can last from minutes to hours and is caused by certain foods or medications. It occurs in parts where there are soft tissues like the eyelids, mouth, and genitals according to the post.
