This is the process that provides energy for these functions to take place:

  • Breathing.
  • Circulating blood.
  • Digesting food.
  • Growing and repairing cells.
  • Managing hormone levels.
  • Regulating body temperature.

What are the signs that your metabolism is fast? Some possible indicators are weight loss, anemia, fatigue, elevated heart rate, feeling hot and sweaty most of the time, and feeling hungry throughout the day. This does not lead to thinness.

Having a high basal and resting metabolic rate indicates that the body burns more calories naturally. But in terms of health, this does not necessarily mean that you are in a good or bad state. What’s important is you make sure that you take in enough calories to sustain yourself and nourish your body.

Take note that taking more calories than you actually burn will lead to weight gain. And this weight gain can result in obesity, diabetes, and metabolic disorders such as Gaucher Disease, hemochromatosis, Maple syrup urine disease, Tay-Sachs disease, and Wilson disease.

Several factors can affect one’s metabolism such as muscle mass, age, gender, genes, physical activity, and vices like smoking.

If you have a slow metabolism, these are the things you can do to improve it according to a post from Cleveland Clinic:

  1. Don’t skip meals.
  2. Fuel it with the right food choices like fresh fruits and vegetables, lean protein, and healthy carbohydrates and fats.
  3. Do strength training and other weight-resistance types of exercises.
  4. Quit smoking.
  5. Get enough sleep.
  6. Avoid crash diets.
