Are cramps during pregnancy normal?

Yes. This is pretty common. The pain you are experiencing during the first 12 weeks is just normal and this is because of the expanding of the womb, stretching of the ligaments as your bump grows, hormones constipation, or trapped wind.

Normally, the pain is just mild and will just go away when you change position, take a rest, or poo.

Oftentimes, incidents of pain such as this always give expecting parents thoughts that it could be a sign of miscarriage.

However, if there are other symptoms that come with the pain, this is the time you must seek medical attention.

The other symptoms are:

  • bleeding or spotting
  • regular cramping or tightenings
  • vaginal discharge that’s unusual for you
  • lower back pain
  • pain or burning when you pee
  • the pain is severe or does not go away after you’ve rested for 30 to 60 minutes

According to a post from NHS, “any of these could be the symptoms of something that needs to be checked or treated urgently”.

The other serious causes are:

  1. Ectopic pregnancy
  2. Miscarriage
  3. Pre-eclampsia
  4. Premature labor
  5. Placental abruption
  6. UTI (urinary tract infection)

Meanwhile, to relieve stomach pain, it is important to lie down and relax, drink plenty of water, take a warm bath, wear a belly band, and change positions.
