BLACKHEADS – Clogged hair follicles cause blackheads and this is how you can treat and prevent this from developing in your skin.

One of the most common skin complaints is the appearance of blackheads on the face due to clogged hair follicles. These small bumps are mild types of acne that do not only develop in the skin but also in other parts like the back, chest, neck, arms, and shoulders.

These are formed when there’s a clog in the opening of hair follicles. The sebaceous gland produces an oil called sebum and this oil makes the skin’s texture soft. If the bump is closed, it is called a whitehead and if the bump is open and exposed that appears black, it is called a blackhead.

Here are the reasons why blackheads appear:

  • increased sebum production
  • abnormal formation of keratin
  • increased hormones and hormonal changes
  • presence of bacteria on the skin that causes acne such as Propionibacterium acnes

Management and treatment of this:

  • Salicylic acid dissolves dead skin cells and prevents clogging.
  • Azelaic acid kills microorganisms on the skin and decreases swelling.
  • Benzoyl peroxide helps kill bacteria.
  • Retinoids break black- and whiteheads.

If you have this skin problem, avoid squeezing, steaming, scrubbing, removers (such as strips, masks, and vacuums), and oil-based makeups and skin care products based on a post from Medical News Today.

To prevent this, make sure to wash your face daily using warm water and a mild facial cleanser. Also, consistently apply moisturizer and if you have to use makeup, opt for non-comedogenic products, and keep your hands away from your face.

Experts believe that having this skin problem does not only affect one’s physical appearance but also their mental health. This seems to be unpleasant and might cause anxiety or depression
