The virus that caused shingles or chickenpox may be dormant for several years but may reactivate. The reactivation may result in shingles or, in some cases, it will lead to Ramsay Hunt Syndrome.

The paralysis of the facial nerve and the rash affecting the ears may occur simultaneously but not in all cases. The nerve palsy affecting the facial muscles may cause it to weaken and feel stiff and may prevent the individual from smiling, wrinkling the forehead, or closing one of the eyes.
