Public health expert and cardiologist Doc Willie Ong discussed this topic. He first clarified that this is far different from a brain aneurysm. Accordingly, the aneurysm is the enlargement of a vessel and an aortic aneurysm is the one that involves the aorta in the heart. The aorta is the largest blood vessel in the body and the ruptured aortic aneurysm is indeed life-threatening.

The symptoms of aortic aneurysm depends whether it is thoracic or abdominal. Thoracic aortic aneurysm does not pose any symptoms in some cases but below are some for abdominal:

  • throbbing feeling in the abdomen
  • deep pain in back or side of the abdomen
  • steady, gnawing pain in the abdomen that lasts for hours or days

If AAA ruptures, the person might experience the following:

  • sudden and severe pain in lower abdomen and back
  • nausea and vomiting
  • constipation
  • problems with urination
  • clammy and sweaty skin
  • light-headedness
  • rapid heart rate when standing up
  • shock

Here are the causes:

  • Atherosclerosis
  • smoking
  • hypertension
  • vasculitis or infection in the aorta
  • cocaine use
  • genetic factors
  • Trauma

To prevent this is to avoid the causes. Don’t use tobacco products, eat a healthy diet, keep your blood pressure and cholesterol under control, and get regular exercise are some key factors to avoid this.
