The most expensive spice in the world is saffron. In the Philippines, 2 grams of quality saffron threads cost over Php 1,450.00 and it is not as common as other spices. But just like the other spices, this is also used for many dishes and this is famous for its antioxidant and anticancer benefits.

It is rich in plant compounds that act as antioxidants like crocin, crocetin, safranal, and kaempferol. And since it is high in antioxidants, it may help kill cancer cells.

What makes this spice expensive? It is because of its labor-intensive harvesting method.

Apart from the nutrients and flavor, adding this spice can also give any dish a natural yellow-gold hue making it appear more pleasing.

How do you cook saffron rice? Here are some tips:

  • Prepare the ingredients:
    • 2 cups uncooked long-grain white rice
    • 1/2 teaspoon saffron
    • 3 1/2 cup water
    • 3 tablespoons melted butter
    • 1/2 cup minced red bell pepper
    • 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Instructions:
    • Clean the rice and put it in a cooking pot with 3 1/2 cups water, butter, saffron, bell peppers, and salt, then stir.
    • Let it boil.
    • As soon as it boils, adjust the heat to a simmer and proceed for 15 to 20 minutes until the rice completely absorbs the liquid. Gently, stir the rice in the middle of the process. This will ensure that the ingredients will be distributed evenly.
    • Transfer to a bowl then serve and enjoy!
