And in some cases, there are common foods or some food ingredients that can be toxic without you actually knowing it. How do they become harmful? It is when they are particularly consumed in large amounts.

  • Cherry Pits – the hard thing at the core of a cherry has prussic acid or the poisonous cyanide. If you swallowed it whole, you don’t need to freak out as it will just pass through the end as it is. What you must avoid crunching or crushing it inside your mouth.
  • Apple Seeds – the seeds contain cyanide but it’s not necessarily dangerous because the small seeds contain small amount. However, it is still important to be cautious.
  • Green Potatoes- its leaves, sprouts, and underground stems (tubers) have glycoalkaloid that if consumed, can causenausea, diarrhea, confusion, headaches, and death.
  • Raw Kidney Beans – they have the highest concentration of lectins that may result to bad stomachache, vomitting, or give you diarrhea if eaten.
  • Bitter Almonds – they have the highest levels of amygdalin, a type of chemical that can turn into cyanide.
  • Star fruit – this is not recommended to people with kidney disease. Its toxin can stick around and may result to cause mental confusion, seizures, and death. This is because the damaged kidney may not be able to filter out the toxins efficiently like how the normal kidney does it.
  • Mushrooms – particular kind like the death cap (Amanita phalloides), and the destroying angel (Amanita virosa) are harmful that if taken into your body, it can cause abdominal pain, diarrhea and vomiting, dehydration, intense thirst, liver failure, coma, and death.
  • Mangoes – its skin, bark, and leaves have urushiol, a toxin that can be found in poison ivy based on a post from WebMD.
