If you are a woman, it is comforting to know that many colors are normal. The amount is varied from person to person significantly. A normal discharge is a healthy body function for a certain reason.

However, some abnormal discharge may be caused by an infection like bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, yeast infection, gonorrhea and chlamydia, pelvic inflammatory disease, and others.

Below are the reasons behind the color of your discharge:

  • White – the white discharge at the start or end of a period is normal. However, if the consistency is thick and cottage cheese-like with some itchiness, it could be yeast infection and this must need treatment.
  • Clear – this just normal and may happen anytime or especially after an intense exercise.
  • Clear but stretchy – this is normal and it’s only a sign that you are ovulating.
  • Brown or bloody – this is normal if this happens during or after mentruation. In rare cases, it could be a sign of endometrial or cervical cancer, fibroids, or others.
  • Yellow or green – this is definitely not normal most especially if it comes with an unpleasant smell. It could be an indication of an infection.

As per the Medical News Today article, there were cases that the discharge is gray and this color is not healthy as well. This could be because of an infection called bacterial vaginosis where the other symptoms include itching, irritation, strong odor, and swelling in the opening.
