Here are some things about parabens and the reasons why it is not good for your skin. Check it out below!

PARABENS – This is what parabens mean and the damages it can cause to your skin you probably do not know yet.

Skin is the largest organ of the body and what it looks like makes a great impact on how someone would see you. It also speaks a lot about your hygiene and the skin is the very first thing people will notice first about you.

It also protects the body against germs, regulates body temperature, and enables us to feel. The skin has layers – epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis – which are prone to certain problems like skin cancer, acne, wrinkles, and rashes.

And in order to maintain great skin, we must know how to take care of it by being mindful of what we apply to it. Some ingredients of products we use can be harmful to the skin and these harmful things to the skin include parabens.

The United States Food and Drugs Administration indicated that parabens are “commonly used as preservatives in cosmetics”. The use of this prevents the growth of harmful bacteria and mold “in order to protect both the products and consumers”.

Some types of this usually used or added to the products are methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, and ethylparaben. Makeup, moisturizers, hair care products, and shaving products are the varieties that have this.

When it comes to its effects on human health, the FDA scientists are still doing further studies regarding this.

These are the questions they are considering when it comes to matters like this in using preservatives in cosmetics:

  • What do published studies show about the possible hazards of parabens, and the effects of parabens on human health? For example, do experimental findings with various parabens also happen in real life?
  • What are the hazards and risks of not using parabens? If we stop using parabens to protect cosmetics and consumers from harmful bacteria, are there safer alternatives for preservatives?
  • If there are paraben-related health effects that are scientifically supported and documented, how do these effects relate to the use of parabens in cosmetics?
  • Do the different kinds of parabens act the same or differently in our bodies?

The EWG.org stated some health effects:

  • affects the male and female reproductive system function, development, fertility, and birth outcomes because it acts like the hormone estrogen
  • interferes in the production of hormones
  • propyl- and butylparaben are endocrine-disrupting
  • chemicalspropyl-, isopropyl- and isobutylparabens disrupted hormone signals, a result in animal studies
  • researchers from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health also found decreased fertility in human studies
