In a much more important aspect, it reflects our overall health. One way to tell is if you have vibrant and healthy hair, it means that your body is producing enough vitamins and other nutrients.

And actually available now in the market are various treatments that can help a person address his or her hair dilemma. One of the most famous treatments is the keratin treatment. This particular treatment smoothens and straightens the hair.

Other terms used to call this treatment include “Brazilian blowout” and “smoothing treatment”. This is dubbed as the miracle way to have smoother and shinier hair with just a single appointment.

Keratin is actually the protein that your hair naturally has. And in this treatment, the process will take place for about 90 minutes but how long the process would last will depend on the length of your hair. The stylist will apply a keratin hair-straightening product to your hair and leave it there for a certain amount of time to coat your hair.

After that, it will then be blow-dried and methodically flat ironed. If all these steps are done correctly, you will achieve a smooth hair texture, better hair appearance, and eliminate frizz which will last for months.

Meanwhile, there are some potential side effects this treatment may cause and these side effects usually come from the added ingredients of the product just like formaldehyde.

According to the American Cancer Society, this chemical is a known carcinogen. This means that it can either cause cancer or aid cancer to grow.

The Food and Drug Administration said that the following are some things formaldehyde from keratin treatment can cause:

  • eye irritation
  • headaches
  • dizziness
  • sore throat
  • coughing
  • wheezing
  • nausea
  • chest pain
  • vomiting
  • rash

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry also noted that getting exposed to 0.1 to 0.5 parts per million (ppm) of formaldehyde may lead to nose and eye irritation, neurological effects, and increased risk of asthma and allergies.

And at the 0.6 to 1.9 ppm levels, a person may suffer eczema or experience changes in lung function.

Watch out for these other terms because sometimes, manufacturers use other names for formaldehyde such as:

  • aldehyde
  • bonded aldehyde
  • formalin
  • formic aldehyde
  • methanediol
  • methanal
  • methyl aldehyde
  • methylene glycol
  • methylene oxide
  • morbicid acid
