However, suffering from this can sometimes indicate other things like pregnancy or hormonal changes. In rare cases, such happening can become a cause for concern, most especially, if it persists or if you’re bleeding that requires a pad or tampon.

In some cases, spotting is your body’s way of telling you of having an STD, uterine fibroids or polyps, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or perimenopause.

Now, what if it occurs before you have your period?

According to a post from Healthline, one of these may be the possible reason:

  1. Pregnancy
This comes in the colors pink, red, or brown. There is about 15 to 25 percent of pregnant people suffer from light bleeding during their first trimester.
  2. Hormonal Birth Control
It may be in the form of pills, patches, injections, rings, or implants. It could be due to skipping doses, not following the instructions in taking them, changes in type and doses, and using them for a long time.
  3. Ovulation
This happens halfway through a woman’s menstrual cycle. when the ovaries release an egg that travels down a fallopian tube and becomes available for fertilization.
  4. Perimenopause
The time your body traditions to menopause. This can cause irregular periods and spotting.

Other reasons include certain cancers, implantation bleeding, trauma, cervical polyps, Pelvic inflammatory disease, fibroid, endometriosis, PCOS, stress, certain medications, and thyroid problems.

The difference between spotting and period can be determined through duration and volume. Spotting lasts shorter compared to the period. It can only last for 1 to two days while the period can last for four days or more. Also, spotting is so light that it cannot soak the pad. Menstruation, however, can produce blood enough to fill a pad.
