Gag Reflex – What Is Gag Reflex and How To Get Rid Of This?

How does a gag reflex work and how to get rid of it?

GAG REFLEX – A gag reflex is just a healthy and normal response and here are some other important things about this that you might want to know.

The pharyngeal reflex is also called the gag reflex. This is defined as a “reflex contraction of the muscles of the posterior pharynx after stimulation of the posterior pharyngeal wall, tonsillar area, or base of the tongue.” The definition is based on the definition given by the National Library Of Medicine.

This reflex is a healthy and normal response of the body to prevent incidents like choking and taking in substances that are potentially harmful. This often happens along with abdominal muscle spasms and nauseous feeling.

A 2015 study said that this happens when a person’s senses are affected such as touch, taste, sight, smell, and sound. An overactive type of this reflexive action might cause someone trouble in some circumstances like going to the dentist or swallowing a pill.

But having an overactive reflex is also associated with the following conditions.

  • acid reflux or multiple sclerosis
  • stress
  • anxiety
  • panic
  • intense physical activity
  • strong or disagreeable odors
  • sensitivity or allergic reaction to certain liquids or foods

One cannot fully stop it but one can do something to desensitize it such as the following:

  • Acupuncture according to a 2015 study
  • Acupressure for self-healing and self-regulation
  • Toothbrushing
  • Local anesthetic
  • Distraction techniques
  • Relaxation techniques

Reflex is an involuntary action that happens without conscious thought.

Gagging is actually a function that protects the body. It may be uncomfortable under some circumstances but it clearly helps you avoid consuming unpleasant things or objects. Managing gagging may take time.
