EATING DISORDERS – A behavioral condition called eating disorder has various types and here are the symptoms of each type.

The severe disturbance in eating behaviors that comes with negative thoughts and emotions is an eating disorder. And by the sound of it, this condition is surely not something you would like.

Such a disorder may greatly affect your functions physically, psychologically, and socially. There are several types of this disorder and that include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, avoidant restrictive food intake disorder, and others.

  • Anorexia nervosa (self-starvation and weight loss) – there are two types of this, the restricting type and the binge-eating/purging type.
    • Symptoms
      • Menstrual periods cease
      • Dizziness or fainting due to dehyration
      • Brittle hair or nails
      • Cold intolerance
      • Muscle weakness and wasting
      • Heartburn and reflux (in those who vomit)
      • Severe constipation, bloating and fullness after meals
      • osteoporosis
      • Depression, irritability, anxiety, poor concentration and fatigue
  • Bulimia Nervosa – eating an unusually high amount of food until the feeling of fullness becomes so painful.
    • Symptoms:
      • frequent bathroom trips after eating
      • chronic sore throat
      • Swelling of the salivary glands in the cheeks
      • Dental decay 
      • Heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux
      • Laxative or diet pill misuse
      • Recurrent unexplained diarrhea
      • Misuse of diuretics (water pills)
      • Feeling dizzy or fainting due to purging
  • Binge Eating Disorder – this is similar to bulimia or the binge eating subtype of anorexia.
    • Symptoms:
      • eating faster than normal
      • eating until very full until the feeling of fullness becomes a discomfort
      • eating huge amounts of foods despite not feeling hungry
      • eating alone because you’re being conscious of how much you eat whenever someone’s around
      • disgusted with oneself, depressed or very guilty binging
  • Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder – a case where one fails to meet his nutritional needs or in short, one is avoiding food.
    • Symptoms:
      • Low appetite and don’t have the interest to eat
      • Avoids foods because of particular reasons like the texture, appearance, color, or smell
      • feeling anxious about the consequence of eating like choking, nausea, vomiting, constipation, an allergic reaction, and many others based on a writeup from American Psychiatric Association.
