DOH Reacts To Steam Inhalation or “Tuob” Being Linked to COVID-19
STEAM INHALATION – The Department of Health (DOH) reacted to claims that tuob can prevent or cure COVID-19.
The COVID-19 pandemic is not yet over in several countries and territories across the globe including the Philippines. This coronavirus disease continues to put thousands of lives at risk.
In PH, the Department of Health (DOH) has recorded 33,069 cases of the disease already. Out of the said total number, 1,212 patients died while 8,910 have already recovered from the disease.

To curb the spread of the infection, the entire country is still under a community quarantine now. Cebu City which has the highest recorded cases is under an Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ).
Metro Manila and several other areas are under a General Community Quarantine (GCQ). The low risk areas are under a Modified GCQ now.
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, several claims about this coronavirus disease are crossing the surface. One of these claims is that steam inhalation or locally known as tuob can prevent or cure the disease. To this, the DOH reacted.
Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire expressed that there is no scientific basis that proves that steam inhalation or tuob can prevent COVID-19.
According to Vergeire, it can even multiply the risk of spreading the virus as it can be added to the mist. Also, she expressed that loosening the secretions through the inhalation can contribute to the spreading of the virus via coughing.
Aside from the DOH, there are 13 other medical societies claiming that tuob cannot prevent nor cure the COVID-19 disease. Based on the report, it may ease nasal congestion and cough but there is no scientific proof on its ability to diminish viruses.
