Are there different types of collagen? 28 types have actually been identified and these types differ in some factors like how the molecules are assembled. But there are five most common types of collagen used in supplements
According to a post medically reviewed by Kevin Lombardi, MD MPH, these are the five most common types:
- TYPE I
This is the type that makes up 90% of the body’s collagen. this can be found under the surface of the skin’s dermis. Most supplements have this type because of its benefits. This comes from cows, fish, or eggshell membranes and this type helps improve joints, hair, nails, skin, ligament, and cartilage health.
- TYPE II
This type provides joint support and is found in elastic cartilage. It can be sourced from marine and chicken products.
- TYPE III
This is the type found in muscles, arteries, and organs. This has a singular alpha chain while the others have multiple alpha chains. This supports the gut, muscles, blood vessels, and the uterus.
- TYPE V
This is the type that is naturally found in the eye that enables light to pass through the cornea. This supports bones, muscles, the liver, and lungs.
- TYPE X
This is found in joint cartilage and is essential in bone formation. It may help identify underlying rheumatological disorders and can be used to recover from limb damage and broken bones according to the post.
