Among the health conditions that are hard to avoid are skin problems or skin conditions. It is mainly because the skin covers a huge part of the body and it is inevitable to get some scratches, burns, and abrasions.
What is abrasion? It is actually a skin condition that usually happens but not everyone is familiar with the term. This happens most especially to young children who love playing in the streets and would sometimes get some wounds after falling to the ground or scratching one’s skin against a rough surface.
What is abrasion?
Abrasions refer to open wounds obtained from the rubbing of the skin against a rough surface. It is also called “graze” and “scrape’. If obtained from sliding across hard ground, it is usually called “road rash”.
Usually, skin abrasions happen in elbows, knees, shins, ankles, and upper extremities. They are common injuries with varying extents.
Abrasion degrees & their Symptoms
- First degree
- There is superficial damage on the epidermis or the first layer of the skin. It is mild and will not bleed.
- Second degree
- This happens when there is damage both on the epidermis and the dermis, the second layer of the skin. There is also mild bleeding.
- Third degree
- This is severe abrasion. There is friction and tearing of the skin based on Healthline. There is heavy bleeding and it requires intense medical treatment.
Treatment of Skin Abrasion:
- Wash your hands.
- Clean the affected area with lukewarm water and mild soap. Take the dirt and the other particles using sterilized tweezers.
- For mild cases with no bleeding, do not cover the wound. If there is bleeding, use a bandage or cloth to cover it and apply pressure to stop the bleeding.
- Put a thin layer of antibiotic ointment on the wound and cover it with bandage or gauze. Apply the ointment and change the cover once daily.
