For gout diet, here are the foods that gout patients should and shouldn’t eat.
GOUT DIET – Here is a food guide for those who are suffering from gout in terms of those that they should and shouldn’t be eating.
The condition “Gout” is an inflammatory arthritis which is developed in people with high levels of uric acid in the blood. This acid causes formation of needle-like crystals in a joint resulting to sudden, severe episodes of pain, tenderness, redness, warmth and swelling.
Among the risk factors in developing gout are obesity, excessive weight gain, especially in youth, moderate to heavy alcohol intake, high blood pressure, and abnormal kidney function.
What gout patients should eat:
- Whole grain foods such as wheat bread and brown rice. Limit intake of refined carbohydrates such as white rice, white bread, and pasta.
- Eat more fruits and vegetables such as lettuce, tomatoes, carrots and celery.
- Take more veggies which are called Purine-rich vegetables. For example, beans, peas, lentils, and spinach.
- Include low-fat dairy products to add to your protein intake which can also help reduce gout attacks.
- Eat fresh fruits like bananas, apples, oranges, and pears.
- Drink 8 to 12 glasses of water everyday.
What gout patients should avoid or limit eating:
- Meat products such as red meats from beef, pork, and lamb and organ innards.
- Limit seafoods such as tuna, shrimp, clams, and shellfish. Eat in utmost moderation.
- Avoid eating fats especially from meat products.
- Stop, if possible, drinking alcoholic drinks
- Foods and drinks such as sodas and juice drinks are high in High-Fructose Corn Syrup which increases uric acid level.
