EMOTIONS DURING MENSTRUAL CYCLE – Here’s an explanation of what happens to a woman’s emotions during her menstrual cycle.

Menses, menstrual period, cycle, and period are the other terms one can call menstruation. The blood that comes out is actually composed partly of blood and partly tissue. This comes out through the uterus to the cervix and eventually out of the body.

And most women can attest to feeling a bit more down during their red days. They are feeling depressed, sad, or anxious and these emotions are common. Hormonal changes are the reason behind this.

These fluctuations, especially in the estrogen levels, affect a woman’s mood, hence, the mood swings. This event is part of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) which a woman may feel physically and emotionally.

Some of the most common emotional PMS are the following:

  • Irritability
  • Anger
  • Depression
  • Crying
  • Oversensitivity
  • Feeling nervous and anxious
  • Alternating sadness and rage

Here are the reasons behind this happening:

  • Low serotonin levels – Serotonin is the happiness hormone that aids regulation of your mood, appetite, and the ability to have a night of quality sleep.
  • Poor sleep quality – Lack of sleep and rest can affect someone’s mood which may also lead to mental fatigue and crankiness.
  • Changes in appetite – Most women crave either sweet or salty foods during PMS but consuming such may have a different effect. Instead of these foods making them satisfied, they can have adverse effects. A 1995 study actually stated that carbohydrates can boost serotonin levels temporarily.
  • Being sedentary – Not having enough physical activity can make your negative emotions worse.
