Guide on Who Can Donate Blood – Are People w/ Diabetes or High Blood Allowed?
DIABETES & HIGH BLOOD – Here is a guide on whether people with these health conditions are allowed to donate blood or not.
Sadly, everyday, a lot of people are out looking for bags of blood for a loved one who will go through an operation. These are usually needed most especially for major and risky surgeries.
It is not easy to obtain it. In most cases, you have to be a donor or to ask help from someone who is a donor to be able to get some bags. Certain cards certifying that you are a donor or someone you know is a donor may be requested.
Based on a video of Dr. Willie Ong, in line with the pursuit to help people, Mr. Nap Marilag put up an organization – Dugong Alay, Dugtong Buhay. It conducts blood-letting activities as it aims to help those who are in need.
Mr. Marilag was once a construction worker who became an employee and then, later on, a medical technologist. He recognized the struggle to look for blood even for rich people.
Based on the video, 70% of those that are donated from the activities conducted by the organization are given to their partner hospitals. The remaining 30% remains in the organization and are also used to help the public.
Most of those who obtain the services provided by the organization ask the referral from Dr. Rey Saline. Although it is really unwanted, if time comes that you need some blood, you may bring two (2) donors to obtain some bags.
In the video, it is stated that people with high blood pressure (hypertension) and diabetes are allowed to donate blood. Only those with infectious diseases like malaria and hepatitis will not be allowed to donate.
