Guide on COVID-19 Booster Shots – When Is It Necessary
COVID-19 BOOSTER SHOTS – Dr. Katherine O’Brien cited three (3) cases wherein a booster shot for the COVID-19 vaccine are needed.
Many countries including the Philippines remain in the midst of a tough fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. These nations are in the pursuit of population protection through vaccines.
In PH, different vaccine brands including Sinovac, AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Moderna, Janssen, and Sputnik V arrived and were administered to the people. Most of these vaccines are given on two (2) shots while Janssen is a single-dose vaccine.
The national government targets at least 70 million people vaccinated for population protection. The health workers, the frontliners in the fight against COVID-19, are the top priority in the vaccination ladder.
The senior citizens and those individuals with co-morbidities were also prioritized in the vaccination against COVID-19. Recently, the Health Department gave a green signal on the giving of COVID-19 booster shots to the health workers.
Many countries abroad are already administering COVID-19 booster shots to their people. Based on an article on the official website of the World Health Organization (WHO), there are three (3) situations wherein a booster shot is needed.
Based on World Health Organization, Dr. Katherine O’Brien cited these three (3) categories wherein COVID-19 booster shots are needed:
- if the body did not respond adequately to the first two (2) doses received and this usually happens among immuno-compromised individuals
- if the immunity that the body received and achieved from the first two (2) doses of the COVID-19 vaccine starts to wane or go down over time
- if the COVID vaccine’s performance is less or not enough to fight the new variants that have emerged as the virus continues to mutate and some variants may be stronger than the previous ones and may resist certain vaccines
