BINGE EATING DISORDER – Doc Willie Ong explains the nature and causes of Binge Eating Disorder which some people are suffering from.
If you have this compulsive or abnormal consumption of food, you might have this condition called Binge Eating Disorder (BED). In 1959, Albert Stunkard, a psychiatrist and researcher, called this as Night Eating Syndrome (NES). It affects both men and women and the one who suffers this condition tends to treat food as their way to cope over something.
CAUSES:
- Biological problem
- Hormonal abnormalities in blood
- Psychological problems (such as depression where sadness leads them to eat excessively)
- Not happy with their self (experiencing low confidence and self-esteem where eating comforts them)
- Trauma
SYMPTOMS:
- Unstoppable and uncontrollable eating despite having full stomach
- Eating large amount of foods in a short period of time
- Eating rapidly than normal
- Excessive buying of food stock
- Eating a lot when alone but eating so little when around with many people
With this condition, a person might obtain complications and will affect the health. Through excessive eating, one might have heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, over weight, high blood, gall bladder stones, fats, stomach ache, depression, anxiety, Cardiovascular disease, Insomnia or sleep apnea, Gastrointestinal difficulties, and Muscle and/or joint pain .
TREATMENT:
- Seeing a psychologist and psychiatrist
- Anti-depressants
- Drink 10 to 12 glasses of water everyday
- Meditation such as yoga
- Massage for relaxations
- Eat vegetable instead of junk foods
- Exercising
- Never skip meals
- Enough rest and sleep
- Keeping a diary to vent out feelings through writing
- Someone to talk to
