Here are some seafood health benefits and risks that you probably don’t know yet.
SEAFOOD HEALTH BENEFITS – These are the types, health benefits, and risks when you eat your favorite seafood.
Among everyone’s favorite and go-to food any time of the day is seafood. There are several types: fish, crustaceans (like lobster and shrimp), mollusks (like clams and oysters), and echinoderms (like sea urchins).
The types such as the fish, crustaceans, and mollusks are known for their wealth of nutritional components. The various types of seafood are filled with good stuff like vitamin B, B-complex vitamins, vitamin A, and vitamin D for bones and the immune system.
Aside from being highly nutritious, here are the other benefits of eating seafood:
- They are great sources of Omega-3 fatty acids.
- Because of its protein, vitamins, minerals, and anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids, it can reduce risks of certain diseases.
- They are high in protein and low in saturated fat which means they are good for the heart.
- The omega-3 fatty acids it has can improve skin health.
However, there are certain ways making seafood unhealthy such as the type and how it is consumed. Like in fishes, the nutritional value decreases when you fry them. Frying alone is already unhealthy.
Also, salted and smoked fish is being linked to certain diseases. Some fishes are also high in heavy metal mercury due to factors like age, size, and the nature of water it has lived in. Shark, certain types of tuna, swordfish, tilefish, and king mackerel are high in mercury as per a report from Healthline.
The best way to consume seafood is by consuming it in nutritious ways like baking, sauteing, or steaming. Generally, they have been considered protein sources low in calories. Watch out for those fishes with high mercury in them.
