By taking away dead skin cells on the surface of the skin, it may help improve one’s appearance and encourage good circulation. However, exfoliation has some downsides such as damaging the skin or causing irritation.

You can do this skincare method in two ways – either mechanically or chemically. The mechanical way of exfoliation is when you use a certain object to do this method like sponges or facial brushes. The chemical way of doing this, on the other hand, is using products which chemicals such as alpha-hydroxy acids and beta-hydroxy acids.

American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) said that exfoliation can improve a person’s appearance. A 2016 study also stated that one can achieve a smoother and more polished because this can stimulate the turnover of new cells.

Here are some tips on how to do this based on your skin type:

  • Dry skin
Avoid doing exfoliation in a mechanical way such as using an exfoliating brush, exfoliating sponge, exfoliating glove, or exfoliating scrub. It may only make your skin even drier and cause microtears. The use of AHA is effective. One may also use glycolic acid followed by SPF and moisturizer.
  • Sensitive skin
Avoid scrubbing or any mechanical methods as it may just irritate the skin and cause redness.
  • Oily skin
You may use an exfoliator or scrub just as long as you are gentle and do this in a circular motion.
  • Normal skin
You may have to experiment until you find the one that best suits your skin. Any method is safe to do.
  • Combination skin
If you have this skin type, you may also have to do a combination of the mechanical and chemical ways. But never use both at the same time or on the same day.
