SYMPTOMS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION – These are the causes, prevention, and symptoms of heat exhaustion that you should know.

Heat exhaustion is a condition resulting from the overheating of the body. What causes this condition include being exposed to high temperatures with high humidity while doing a strenuous activity. Without immediate action to treat this, one may suffer from life-threatening medical issues like heat stroke.

Dehydration, overdressing, and alcohol consumption are the other factors that can affect the body’s ability to regulate temperature and maintain its normal measure. The common indications of this condition are heavy sweating and having a rapid pulse.

These are the symptoms that you should be looking for:

  • Cool, moist skin with goose bumps when in the heat
  • Heavy sweating
  • Faintness
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Weak, rapid pulse
  • Low blood pressure upon standing
  • Muscle cramps
  • Nausea
  • Headache

If you think you have these signs, stop the activity you are doing immediately and put yourself to rest, try to transfer to a much cooler area, and drink cold water. If nothing seemed to have improved after an hour, seek medical attention, most especially if one of these indications becomes worse.

Meanwhile, according to an article from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), apart from heat exhaustion, other heat-related conditions include heat stroke, heat cramps, sunburn, and heat rash.

To protect yourself, do wear clothes that are loose-fitting and lightweight, apply skin protection such as sunscreen lotion to prevent sunburn, avoid extreme exercise during hot hours, and drink a lot of water to help the body cool down.
