Recently, one of the diseases that have resurfaced in the Philippines is diphtheria. Undeniably, this is one of the health conditions that not everyone is aware of despite that a lot of people lost their lives due to it.
In a video, Dr. Willie Ong explained diphtheria. The doctor cited its cause, symptoms, and prevention. He also pointed out how this infectious disease can be transmitted from one person to another.
According to Doc Willie, this serious disease is caused by the bacterium corynebacterium diphtheria which produces toxin. It is characterized by the formation of thick, grey coating of pseudomembrane at the back of the nose, tonsils, throat, or voice box.
What are the common symptoms of this disease?

- swollen glands in the neck
Based on the video, diphtheria can lead to airway blockage, heart failure, nerve damage, pneumonia, paralysis, and, eventually, to death. Both the children and the adult who have no up-to-date vaccinations are at risk for this disease.
Diphtheria can be transmitted through respiratory droplets like sneezing or coughing, objects, and contact with open sores. With regards to its prevention, vaccines remain as the best prevention. Its treatment may require antibiotic and as well as control of the infection.
