What are the side effects of detox teas when you drink it for long term?
DETOX TEAS – Senna, laxative, or detox teas reportedly aids weight loss, however, experts sees there are dark side to this so called healthy drink.
Senna is accordingly a herbal medicine made from the leaves, flowers, and fruit of a flowering plant in the legume family. And this has long been used as laxative due to its anthraquinones content which is very famous for weight loss and promotes detoxification.
However, despite the good effects it has, there are dark and side effects which makes it dangerous to drink without consulting a doctor. People who have certain medical conditions such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, appendicitis, senna allergy, diarrhea, dehydration, abdominal pain, or others that causes intestinal obstruction are not allowed to consume this.
Here are the dark sides:
- Excess use can cause irritation to digestive system, cause diarrhea, and stomach cramps, and prevents the body from getting the nutrients from the food we eat.
- This is not good for frequent or long-term use as it can cause laxative dependence, electrolyte disturbances, and liver damage.
- Some people also get allergic reactions to senna which is why there are people who must avoid this.
- Senna is accordingly not recommended to women who are pregnant and do breastfeeding as per Elle.
It has also negative interactions to certain types of medications like blood thinners, diuretics, steroids, licorice root, and heart rhythm medications. According to article from Health Line, this shouldn’t be used for more than 7 days unless otherwise instructed by you healthcare provider.
