Food is essentially beneficial to the body but some foods can harm the body, especially the unhealthy ones. In some instances, some foods can worsen a certain health condition.
When it comes to allergies, there are also foods that can worsen the condition.

Wine
Wine is known to be high in histamines. This is one of the chemicals the body pumps out when you have allergies. Tania Elliott, MD, a spokesperson for the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, explained that during the allergy season, the body produces chemicals that trigger an allergic response. She said that the most predominant one is histamine, and it’s largely responsible for itching, redness, swelling, and congestion.
Aged cheese
A study published by Iowa State University stated that certain microbes found in aged cheese can produce allergy-like reactions. It is because cheese also has histamines. This has nothing to do with dairy, Dr. Elliot said.
Fresh fruits
Some fruits, including berries, have protein in their skin that is similar to pollen. “In those with berry allergies, the body sees the fresh fruit as a toxin releasing histamines to fight it commonly causing symptoms such as swelling, rashes, and gastrointestinal issues,” Shawn Nasseri, MD, ENT-otolaryngologist in Beverly Hills, California said.
Cocktails
Dr. Elliot explained that alcohol causes dilation of the blood vessels. This can contribute to flushed skin and congestion.
Spicy foods
Spicy foods can help clear the sinuses and the nasal passages and thin out mucus. This is a good thing but there is a condition called gustatory rhinitis. People having this develop allergic irritation from spicy foods. This causes the sneezing or a runny nose when exposed to spicy foods.
Herbal tea
Plants and flowers can make you sneeze and herbal teas are made from plants. It is possible that the tea leaves can cross-react with plant pollen.
Red meat
There is a condition called alpha-gal allergy, a severe, sudden allergy to red meat believed to be transmitted by ticks and other insects. According to experts, ticks can pick up a sugar molecule called alpha-gal from its prey and transfer it to its next victim. If the next victim is you, your body can react to alpha-gal and you end up allergic to red meat.
