VITAL SIGNS – Doctor Willie Ong explained how to get the heart rate and the respiratory rate of a person which are vital most especially during emergencies.

Unfortunately, emergencies can take place anywhere. It may involve our loved ones or another person seating or standing beside us in a public area. When emergency calls, it is a perfect opportunity to help provided that we know what to do for the safety of the patient.

One of the basic things that we can learn is getting the vital signs. These refer to the blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, pulse, and temperature of the patient. Pain is also included on the list.

By knowing how to take them properly and accurately, we will know whether the heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, etc. of a person is normal or not. With regards to the BP level, anything below or over 120/80mmHg and 139/89mmHg are considered low or high.

Heart Rate:

  • Infant: 120-160
  • Toddler: 90-140
  • Preschooler: 80-110
  • School-Ager: 75-100
  • Adolescent: 60-90
  • Adult: 60-100

Respiratory Rate:

  • < 1 year old: 30-40
  • 1-2 years old: 25-35
  • 2-5 years old: 25-30
  • 5-12 years old: 20-25
  • >12 years old: 12-20
