One of the things that a lot of people feel every now and then is a palpitating heart or the unusual beating of the heart. There are different causes and we can identify it if it is normal or not.
If you heart palpitates before you had to go up the stage and perform or when the teacher suddenly called your name, that is normal. It indicates nervousness or a state of shock.
However, if your heart palpitates even if there is no valid reason, a more serious cause may be responsible behind it. Based on a video of Dr. Willie Ong, the normal heart rate is between 60 to 90 beats per minute.
In the video, Dr. Willie Ong cited the common causes of heart palpitation. He also generously gave some tips on what to do about it.
Common Causes:
- Nervousness
- Anxiety
- Exercise
- Drinking coffee
- Drinking tea
- Taking energy drinks
- Medicines (like the medicines for cold or asthma)
What To Do?
- Try to slow down and try to relax.
- You can reduce your intake of coffee, tea, and soda. Choose decaffeinated drinks.
- Try to do deep and slow breathing when you’re having anxiety or you feel the palpitation. Try to relax and do ten counts of slow breathing. Inhale slowly through the nose then make four counts, hold it in. Then exhale slowly through the mouth up to six counts. You can do this several times for several minutes and you will find your heart rate slowing down.
Based on the video, there are more serious of heart palpitation. Dr. Willie Ong cited thyroid problem and heart rhythm abnormalities. In these cases, it is best to see a doctor for a thorough check-up.
