A saline solution can be made at home. This is just a very simple solution and easy to do but has several useful purposes. It is generally safe to be made at home.
The key to making a safe solution is seriously following the guidelines and following proper hygiene.
If prepared correctly, this homemade solution will be just as good as distilled water.
Here are some of the many uses of this:
- To relieve the symptoms of sinusitis, colds, and allergies. This can be used for nasal irrigation.
- Used to gargle to relieve sore throat.
- It can also help to clean cuts and wounds. It can help prevent infection.
- This can be used to irrigate the bladder for people who have catheters.
- Soaking certain objects like contact lenses and piercings can help prevent the growth of bacteria.
Apart from the mentioned purposes, this may also be used for fluid replenishment, electrolyte balancing, easing congestion symptoms
Based on a post from C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital Colorectal Program, here are the things you should prepare for this solution:
- 2 teaspoons of table salt
- 1000 mL (4 cups) of warm tap water
- Measuring teaspoon
- Clean container with a lid
*The normal saline recipe is two teaspoons to one litter of warm water.
In preparation just pour the two teaspoons of table salt into one litter of warm water and dissolve it. Label the container. This solution can be stored at room temperature for three days. Once it looks cloudy or dirty, throw it away immediately.
