Guide on Treating Maskne or Pimple/Acne Breakout due to Face Mask
MASKNE – Are you one of those individuals who are going through a pimple or acne breakout due to wearing a face mask daily?
One of the biggest changes brought by the COVID-19 pandemic is the wearing of face masks most especially in public areas. In the Philippines and several other countries abroad, it is one of the main health protocols.
It is more than two (2) years now since the pandemic started. Daily, the people are wearing face masks when going to work, to the grocery stores, to church, etc. It became part of the “must wears” for protection.
However, on the other side of the defense it gives, some individuals developed pimples or acne breakouts due to constant wearing of face masks. Based on an article on Healthline, this condition is called “Maskne”.
Maskne is due to clogged pores. There are already oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells in your face and they can build up more and block your pores when you wear a face mask. But, do not stop wearing your face mask as it is your defense against COVID-19 which is a hundred times more serious than any skin problem a face mask can cause.
There are ways to treat Maskne. Based on the article, here are some of the things that you can do:
- Wash your face regularly. Using lukewarm water, wash your face once in the morning, once at night before going to bed, and after sweating or wearing of face mask. Use a clean towel in drying your face and pat it instead of rubbing the towel to avoid skin irritation.
- Use a gentle cleanser. Remove excess sweat, oil, and bacteria from your face with the help of a gentle cleanser.
- Use a moisturizer. Keep your skin hydrated by using a noncomedogenic moisturizer.
- Wash fabric masks. If you are using fabric masks, it is important to wash them after every use. Make sure to use hypoallergenic fabric masks.
- Use antimicrobial cream. You may apply some anti-microbial cream before putting in your mask.
