LIST OF PHOBIAS – Here’s a list of phobias, an anxiety disorder that involves intense fear, and their meanings.

The American Psychiatric Association (APA) has introduced: social phobia, agoraphobia, and specific phobia. The specific phobias may fall into four categories such as natural environment, animals, medical treatments or issues, and specific situations. Here’s a list.

This is the meaning of phobia and some examples of this.

PHOBIA – A phobia is an excessive and irrational fear reaction and here are some things to know about this.

Chief Medical Editor of Harvard Health Publishing said that phobia is a type of anxiety disorder. He defined this as “a persistent, excessive, unrealistic fear of an object, person, animal, activity or situation”.

A person who has this excessive fear over a specific object or situation can do one of these two things: avoid the trigger or face it with intense distress and anxiety.

It has three major types:

  • Specific (simple) – this is the most common form wherein a person is afraid of specific things like spiders, snakes clowns, dentists, doctors, dark places, thunderstorms, high places, flying in a plane, and among others.
  • Social anxiety disorder (social) – the person experiences profound fear in social situations where there’s a possibility that they may be humiliated, embarrassed, or judged by other people.
  • Agoraphobia – this is the fear of being in public places

Symptoms according to the post:

  1. A sensation of excessive fear or anxiety once faced with specific triggers
  2. Irrational feelings
  3. Avoiding the triggers
  4. Signs related to anxiety such as tremors, palpitations, sweating, shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea or others

There’s is no effective ways to prevent this disorder but undergoing some treatment may help lessen the impacts.

Desensitization therapy or exposure therapy is used to treat the fear of specific objects while social anxiety disorder may be treated with a medication called a beta-blocker like propranolol. And agrophobia can be treated SSRI antidepressants and other types of antidepressants like mirtazapine (Remeron), venlafaxine (Effexor), clomipramine (Anafranil) and imipramine (Tofranil).
