There are a lot of beliefs that surround appendicitis. One of these is the claim that swallowing orange seeds increases the risk of the inflammation of the appendix.

Based on an article on LSG Group, Head of Culinary Excellence of LSG Group in the Asia-Pacific region Fritz Gross explained that while it is possible for orange seeds to enter the appendix, “the probability is very low”.

Gross stressed that there is nothing to worry about if you have accidentally swallowed the orange seeds. In fact, according to him, the same thing applies to apple seeds.

With regards to other fruits like cherries, the LSG Group Head said that cherry pits aren’t much of a concern if you fear appendicitis as its size usually won’t allow it to get into the area. However, you must be careful as cherry pits contain amygdalin which converts to hydrocyanic acid in the body.

On the other side, Gross believes that swallowing seeds of fruits like orange and apple is better than accidentally biting them. He stressed their taste and their fiber, antioxidants, and plant compounds content.
