Parts Of The Heart – Heart Anatomy and Function

These are the different parts of the heart and the function of each.

PARTS OF THE HEART – The human heart works non-stop every day, every time and these are the parts that comprise this vital organ of the human body.

The heart is an organ that pumps blood all throughout the body. It is the size of a close fist placed inside the chest that does so much to make a person live. It approximately produces 8 pints of blood in a day and the blood it pumps contains oxygen and nutrients delivered to tissues and organs.

This is the same substance that carries away waste. Along with blood, and blood vessels such as arteries, capillaries, and veins, they make up the circulatory system.

The anatomy of a human heart.

This organ is made up of four chambers. The two upper chambers are called atria and the two in the lower are called ventricles.

These four chambers are connected to major veins or arteries. The superior and inferior vena cava are two of the largest veins in the body and the same veins where deoxygenated blood travels through to the right atrium.

Pulmonary veins, on the other hand, supply oxygenated blood to the left atrium.

The muscular wall that divides the heart into two is the septa or septum. The atrium and ventricle on the right side deliver deoxygenated blood to the lungs and the left side of the atrium and ventricle is the part that delivers oxygenated blood to the body.

It also has four valves and they are the following:

  • tricuspid (between the right atrium and the right ventricle)
  • pulmonary (between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery)
  • mitral (between the left atrium and the left ventricle)
  • aortic (between the left ventricle and the aorta.)

Meanwhile, the heart wall has three layers: the endocardium (a thin membrane in the lining of the heart), myocardium (the thickest layer), and epicardium (a thin layer on the heart’s surface).

It’s just a small organ that does all the vigorous work to keep the body going. And understanding the part of this major organ is also understanding how life works.

Without proper care, a heart’s health may deteriorate, and according to a post from WebMD, a heart may get affected by certain serious conditions like coronary artery disease, stable angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, arrhythmia, congestive heart failure, cardiomyopathy, myocarditis, and many more.
