Being a vegetarian is eating a diverse mix of fruits, vegetables, grains, healthy fats, and proteins. And now that it’s a new year, it could also be the perfect time to start something healthier such as in the way of your eating.

Eating clean can give you a wide array of health benefits and you can start doing this not tomorrow or next week or next month – but NOW.

For beginners and even for those who are already doing this, here are some tips about being a vegetarian:

  • Toss some garlic, basil, cayenne pepper, and curry powder to spice up your meals. It doesn’t have to be bland just like how other people have perceived it to be initially. You ca still eat delicious but healthy meals through the flavors from fresh and dried spices and herbs.
  • You eat cheap yet healthy compared to meat-based eating. It also requires lesser salt and will make you get sugar, saturated fats, and additives.
  • Stock up you staples such as your whole grains like oatmeal, quinoa, and bulgur, black beans and chickpeas, high-protein plant foods like tofu, edamame, peas, and lentils, nuts and nut spreads, non-dairy milks like coconut, almond, and soy milk.
  • Before diving into being a vegetarian, these are the types:
    • meatless (no meatless)
    • lacto-vegetarian (no meat but you can eat dairy foods like cheese, milk, yogurt, and butter)
    • lacto-ovo vegetarian (dairy and eggs are allowed)
    • vegan (no foods from any living creatures including lard, gelatin, and honey)
  • Apart from meat, you may also get protein from peas and spinach, mushrooms, broccoli, and guava. Protein is essential for skin, bones, and muscles.
  • Explore your veggies and give them a tweak. You can still go vegetarian without skipping your favorites such as your tacos, pizza, and lasagna.
