Here are some of the reasons why you wake up in the middle of the night:

  • Nocturia or nighttime urination. Also, waking up two to four times to urinate at night might indicate that something is off in your balance of water and electrolytes.
  • A hot room is also a sleep stealer as it causes discomfort. You must sleep in a comfortable range of temperatures.
  • Mild depression keeps you awake leading to trouble falling or staying asleep. Depression is made up of negative feelings and emotions such as negative thoughts, excessive worry, lack of energy, and body aches.
  • Electronic screens and devices are, nowadays, among the major factors why we lose the chance to get quality sleep. If your routine includes scrolling through Twitter and Instagram, this exposes your eyes to the bright light which stops the body from making melatonin or the sleep hormone as per WebMd.
  • Drinking alcohol before bed also messes up your sleep. It may help you sleep easily but once it wears off, you’ll eventually wake up in the middle of the night. Also, drinking caffeine can make it hard for you to fall asleep for it takes 8 hours to wear off.
