“People have their own indications of a mental break or emotional breakdown; it’s the point at which we feel we can no longer handle things. If we were cars, a mental breakdown is a total tire blowout that has us on the side of the road,” Curtis added.

According to Houston Behavioral Healthcare Hospital, the term is coined for “a person has a mental health crisis that overcomes their emotions”. It stems from other mental conditions like depression and anxiety but this one, in particular, is more severe.

These are the common signs in a person who is suffering from this:

  • Hopelessness
  • Thoughts of suicide
  • Sense of worthlessness
  • Unable to sleep
  • Lacking appetite
  • Inability to focus
  • Severe disappointment with their life

According to data from Johns Hopkins, 26% of adults have experienced this condition which may arise or be triggered by certain life events, experiences, or traumas.

Check out the causes:

  • Some major life changes like getting married, going through a divorce, job loss, or starting a new life in a new city.
  • Bad experiences like losing a loved one, physical abuse, vehicular accident, and among others.
  • Having depression.
  • Having anxiety.
  • Being stressed constantly or being “burnout”.
  • Lack of sleep.
  • Financial problems.

Mainly, the treatment depends on what causes this condition. A treatment could be in a form of lifestyle change, taking medication, or “talk therapy” also known as psychotherapy.

As soon as you see the symptoms, make sure to make an appointment right away. It becomes a health concern if it gets in the way in completing your daily tasks.
