What are the hangover symptoms and the factors that contribute to it? Is there something you can do to remedy this?
HANGOVER SYMPTOMS – A night of overindulgence can lead to a set of consequences and this is what you can do when this happens.
The National Institute On Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism define a hangover as “a set of symptoms that occur as a consequence of drinking too much”. It is a general rule that the more you drink, the higher your chances of getting this the following day.
Alcohol is the obvious culprit behind this and the symptoms vary in intensity and usually start several hours after you stop drinking.
What are the symptoms?
Accordingly, fatigue, weakness, thirst, headache, muscle aches, nausea, stomach pain, vertigo, sensitivity to light and sound, anxiety, irritability, sweating, and increased blood pressure are the usual symptoms we feel all over our body after a night of drinking too much.
Several components and substances that are in alcoholic beverages contribute to this condition like congeners which are produced during fermentation. The higher the congeners, the worse the symptoms to other people. Another compound is called sulfites. This is added to wine as a preservative.
Other factors according to the post causing these symptoms are:
- Mild dehydration
- Disrupted sleep
- Gastrointestinal irritation
- Inflammation
- Acetaldehyde exposure
- Mini-withdrawal
What can you do to remedy this? Some of the effective ways is drinking fluid to prevent dehydration. Sometimes, the symptoms include diarrhea, sweating, or vomiting which can all lead to dehydration, and taking up fluids may help with this.
Other ways are eating carbohydrates, avoiding dark-colored alcoholic drinks, taking a pain reliever except for Tylenol, drinking coffee or tea, and consuming greater amounts of zinc and B vitamins.
