What are the bad breath causes, treatments, and ways to prevent it?

BAD BREATH CAUSES – Doc Liza Ong and dentist Dr. Arkhe De Leon discussed everything that a person must know about the causes and prevention of bad breath.

Halitosis is the medical term of bad breath which is a result of poor dental health habits and sometimes an indication of other health problems. The foods you eat and your lifestyle habits affect the smell of your breath.

Now, what causes bad breath? Dentist Dr. Arkhe De Leon said that the most common cause of halitosis is bacteria. The more bacteria you have inside your mouth, the more foul it could smell to which, unfortunately, you are not sometimes aware of. This is because your nose has already adapted to the smell of your mouth but not the noses of other people.

Some of the common causes are:

  • bacterial growth
  • damaged teeth
  • debris on the tongue as sometime you tend to forget this part of your mouth to clean
  • respiratory infections such as sinusitis or bronchitis
  • acidity
  • hunger breath

Tips to improve bad breath:

  • Take fluid and drink water always because the dryer the mouth, the more foul-smelling it is.
  • Practice proper brushing of teeth twice a day which should last for two minutes.
  • Use mouthwash and gargle it for 30 seconds. Then, just leave it there in your mouth for 30 minutes for its full effect. Don’t drink or gargle water after using mouthwash.
  • Always clean your tongue using a tongue scraper.
  • Limit acidic foods intake.
  • Regular check-up with your dentist.
  • To determine the smell of your mouth, lick your wrist or ask other people.
